As was the case for the FotR bonus materials, the extras for TTT contain bits of footage from the films that looks different from the way it appears in the final cuts. Sometimes it is because the sequence shown in a “making of” segment or in a trailer has not yet been digitally graded (changing the colour), or has been graded differently. Sometimes the extras show material that was shot but which was never included in the films, theatrical or EE versions.

As usual, all the caps have been cropped and tweaked slightly for better focus and lighting.

I am giving the thirteen caps below their own post because I think they are so striking.

Back in the last Frodo Art Travesty entry we talked about how fans and reviewers, seeing film-Frodo on the screen for the first time, felt as if a living, breathing angel had stepped out of a Caravaggio.

There isn’t any theme to this group. I just like them. I have titled them according to the extra from which they come. As before, all the caps have been cropped and tweaked for sharper focus and better lighting.

Looking for a particular interview with Alan Lee a few weeks ago, I ended up watching all the extras that came with the theatrical version of The Two Towers. I realised I hadn’t seen some of the material before, much less capped it.

I know that a lot of images from the footage I capped are available on the Internet. But I wanted my own, so I capped them anyway. For those of you who don’t already have screencaps from these extras, or who want more, the next several posts will be of interest to you.

“Ridiculous Thoughts~Alternate Take,” Part Seven....

This last set consists mostly of the "happy" rather than "angsty" material. In these, he seems to have found an interior room or space that has old recording devices in it, he picks up the signal, hears the music, and rejoices.

Several caps like these were posted in a previous entry, but these show a different look on his face. They are from a sequence in which EW is roving through the ruins, looking all around, listening to the mysterious voice....

“Ridiculous Thoughts~Alternate Take,” Part Five....

I thought I was finished with this project when I got a Private Message at K-D from [livejournal.com profile] shelbyshire:

"Did you know there is another version of "Ridiculous Thoughts" on the Cranberries' STAR DVD," she asked.

No, I did not!

Well, she said, there was. And, it had even more Elijah Wood material on it than the "regular" one from the main playlist. Might I want to take a look at it?

Would I????

“Ridiculous Thoughts,” Part One....

In my previous LJ entry (about men in kissing scenes), “How did I manage to get such a hot crush on film-Frodo, who has no love scenes at all?”

Here’s a paraphrase of what I said….

When does one get to see the face of male film characters revealing the range and depth of their emotions? In love or sex scenes, particularly? Nope, in angst scenes.

No, we don't get to see film-Frodo making love. We don’t get to see his face while someone makes him tremble and melt and go wild until he is succumbs in ecstasy. But we do get to see him respond to every sort of non-sexual stimulus: he shivers, swoons, sighs, pants, quakes, sobs, seethes, struggles, strives, sweats, and collapses in delirium. That's when I get to see the emotional "reaction" shots I crave.

Inspired by that post, I am presenting a series of screencaps not of Frodo, but Elijah Wood. They are taken from a 1995 rock video by The Cranberries, for their song, Ridiculous Thoughts…..

This is the last set of screencaps of the four.

This is merely a string of frames continuing directly from the previous set, showing Sandy's reaction shots as the dolphin swims off. The close-ups alternate with shots of the dolphin, farther and farther out to sea, until it is breeching far off in the distance, the sea lit by the nearly-setting sun.

I like to imagine these as illustrating Willow's Frodo after he finally will have been made whole again....

Here is the third set of four.

In these, Sandy has climbed up the ladder and leapt onto the deck, turning around to ready himself to say goodbye to the animal he has come to love. First he has to command Flipper to go. Then Sandy watches as the dolphin swims away.

I loved the range of expressions in these frames. Great illustrations for fanfic, too. *grin*

I know I'm a little bent, but, a year ago, in an attempt to watch all of Elijah Wood's old films, I rented Flipper. It was my duty, as a Frodo fan!

Thinking it was going to be a dull re-tread of the old TV series, I was pleasantly surprised by the watchability of this "for the whole family" film. The actors were engaging, the Bahamian scenery idyllic, the cinematography lovely, and the musical scoring quite good (no TV "Flipper" song for the opening, thankfully).

And, best of all, it had ... heavens! ... the most gorgeous male teenager I've ever seen. The cast list said I was watching Elijah Wood as 'Sandy' -- but I knew better.

As I watched, modern-teenager 'Sandy' (with all his modern-teenager pleasures and pains) simply disappeared. Instead, in my mind, 'Sandy' was transformed into young 'tween Frodo, suitably coifed in a mop of unruly dark curls, and donning a pair of scruffy front-placket breeks and a torn shirt. Except when he was wet and shirtless.... Read more... )

O.K. fans, this set of caps of Elijah Wood learning swordplay along with his fellow hobbit actors is the last I have made from the FotR Extras. I really, really love them.

Many of us were saddened (disappointed? grieved? furious?) that film-Frodo never got to do much on screen with his sword. *sniffle* In Rivendell, he got our hopes up, holding Sting aloft when Bilbo presented it to him, turning it about to admire it for the fine weapon it was. But, subsequently he only managed to acquit himself with a sword in Moria, stabbing the cave troll.

Well, no, that's not precisely true....

Well, Christmas and New Year's are drawing near and I am going to have to knock this off for a while. I have one more set of screencaps to post after this. After those, I am going to make myself desist from preparing any more caps until the New Year. Holidays are crunch time at our house, especially for the mom-person....
