Snow in May

Yes, snow in May. After we went on record for having no measureable snowfall in April, and nearly the warmest March on record, yesterday it snowed. It snowed 4 inches "up the hill" (away from Lake Superior, only a mile or two inland from here), but down here not much. Well, you'll see.

Attached are some photos my husband took to record the event. The top two were taken first, around 6 pm. You can still see the green of the spring growth and pink of the swelling buds and leaves of the crab apple tree. The colour is faint but clear, showing through the the frosting of snow. The other photos were taken just before dark, after yet more snow had fallen. It looks like winter!

This morning it is sunny, the temperature above freezing and the snow is all melted. You'd never know any snow had happened!

Even in during the snowfall the robins were out there bouncing around happily, pulling up worms. It wasn't cold enough to freeze the earth, which was wet with rain (which only later turned to snow). But if we'd had put out annuals in the flower beds (something no sane person living here does until the end of May, at the earliest), they'd have been killed.

Lovely images, but... Brrrrrrr!
There's a lot of strange and unusual weather going around. The winter over here was by far the coldest since 1943, and it was snowing in Oslo earlier in the week. *Not* a common occurrence in May.

Oh, spring is right back on track. Looking out the window, you'd never know that snow happened. The dandelions, certainly, are utterly unfased. :)

A crazy Spring indeed.
Here is raining and cold and there is also snow on the mountain top. It's the colder May in the last 20 years. TV just said this weather will last till the end of the month.
I thought it was because of the dusty volcano, but you too are experiencing a crazy weather.
I bet you the responsible is the bad economical situation. :)

Ha ha, don't worry about the apple tree buds, they'll be fine. After the snow melted this morning, the sun out, you'd never know there'd been any snow. Yes, the weather has been nutty everywhere, and for the last several years, don't you think? Some say global warming, but I wonder if the earth isn't going into its next climate shift anyway, human-made global warming only exacerbating it.

It's not unheard of, but I've never seen May accumulation since I started living here myself (1999). I'm glad it went away immediately. :)

Yes, it's getting quite spring-like, Paulie. We drove 150 miles south today to pick up our daughter from the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport and spring was much further along there. Just 150 miles and what a difference! It was lovely to see piles of lilacs in bloom down there. The leaves on the lilacs in our yard have just started unfurling!

Those pictures are lovely. It's been sunny, but very breezy and cool all day today. Tonight it's supposed to drop down to the mid-forties. Brrrr!

Mid-forties? That's very cold for there, isn't it, Ann? Our daughter just flew in from her stint at a Coast Guard instruction school in Yorktown, VA. She said it was 85 there yesterday and in the afternoon they all went to the beach!

We've been having lovely warm weather. The nights have been cool (around 7C) and the days in the mid-20's. I love this weather! I'm not sure how much longer it's going to stay around, though.

I love snow but now that spring is here, it's no longer the season to enjoy it somehow. We've had a really pleasant spell of weather over in the UK but this week it's back to cold, windy and wet weather again - typical! Actually the wind was cold enough on Friday for it to snow, that raw edge that goes right through all layers of clothes.

Brrr! I remember it feeling ultra-cold the time long ago (1975!) I spent Feb.- March in England. Sometimes it was very mild, far milder than the U.S. I had left. New York City had been still deep in winter, but the London I entered already had crocus and daffodils poking out of green, green lawns in the parks. But when it clouded over, got damp and the wind whisked, brrr. I felt underdressed outdoors and shivered in bed, even though in terms of actual temperature it was not nearly as cold as the cold I left in the the States.

Oh, beautiful photos! Spring was late coming here, too - in fact the trees are now in leaf, but there are still a few with their buds still to break forth.

It has been quite cold here the last few days (well nothing like the cold in your pictures!) although we did have some warm weather for a few days a couple of weeks back.

Your weather sounds like what it's been in the middle Atlantic states (our daughter was just eleven weeks in Yorktown, VA near the ocean, and my mom and brother live in the VA suburbs of D.C.). But don't you live in the U.K.? Maybe this weather pattern is bigger than I thought. :)

Goodness - I'm glad to hear it melted quickly - and I hope the snow didn't damage all the spring flowers and budding trees. Guess winter had to have one last gasp!!

No, it wasn't cold enough to hurt any of the trees or perennials, and we hadn't yet put out anything tender that would be killed. But we heard there was damage to trees where there was heavier snow. The snow was wet and wind strong. Because the trees were already leafing out it made more surface for the snow to get plastered on and weigh down branches. So trees were damaged from breaking limbs, not the cold, as such.
