This is so much fun! My brain is getting cramps, from all the thinkin'.
By caring about and identifying with the slash hero, I was able to identify imaginatively enough to live his story with him.
You know, this is exactly what I experienced when I read my first Boromir/Theodred story written by the exquisite [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]. Her imagination, sensititivity, and skill in taking an obscure character (who wasn't even actually alive in canon) and breathing such life and personality into him that I was awestruck, stunned. Her depiction of compassion, friendship, generosity and understanding between the characters of her OTP opened my eyes, as well, to the infinite possibilities of love all around us.
We could go on forever about how LOTR and the fandom has changed our lives - I seriously can't remember what I used to do with my free time before all this *waves arm expansively* came about, but I do know it was never as creatively satisfying, as mentally and emotionally engaging, as what I'm doing now.
Were we talking about cowboys? and political action? I've lost track. Yay cowboys! Yay democracy! Yay everyone who saw BBM and was moved by it in any kind of a way whatsoever! We will change the world because of it. Not overnight, but sometime.
