As was the case for the FotR bonus materials, the extras for TTT contain bits of footage from the films that looks different from the way it appears in the final cuts. Sometimes it is because the sequence shown in a “making of” segment or in a trailer has not yet been digitally graded (changing the colour), or has been graded differently. Sometimes the extras show material that was shot but which was never included in the films, theatrical or EE versions.

As usual, all the caps have been cropped and tweaked slightly for better focus and lighting.

These are images I wanted to keep for various reasons. I offer them here in case anyone else would like to see or copy them.

I am giving the thirteen caps below their own post because I think they are so striking.

Back in the last Frodo Art Travesty entry we talked about how fans and reviewers, seeing film-Frodo on the screen for the first time, felt as if a living, breathing angel had stepped out of a Caravaggio.

There isn’t any theme to this group. I just like them. I have titled them according to the extra from which they come. As before, all the caps have been cropped and tweaked for sharper focus and better lighting.

Looking for a particular interview with Alan Lee a few weeks ago, I ended up watching all the extras that came with the theatrical version of The Two Towers. I realised I hadn’t seen some of the material before, much less capped it.

I know that a lot of images from the footage I capped are available on the Internet. But I wanted my own, so I capped them anyway. For those of you who don’t already have screencaps from these extras, or who want more, the next several posts will be of interest to you.

Here are some unusual caps from the lovely little sequence in the hearthside scene early in FotR, when Gandalf tells Frodo about the Ring. In it, having learned what the Ring is, Frodo, still quite plucky, says they'll hide the Ring away. After all, know one knows it's there. Frodo stops suddenly and turns, his misgivings written all over his face. Tentatively he adds, "... Do they, Gandalf?"

Yep, another set of gorgeous close-ups of film Frodo.

This set is from a brief moment in "Teaser Two," included in the FotR TE DVD Extras. Yes, this beautiful sequence comes from yet another theatrical trailer for Fellowship. How the fans must have been going berserk. I never saw any of these trailers, of course, since I didn't watch television and never went to the movies. Silly, silly me!

Ian Holm:

Those remarkable, God-given eyes! That glorious, good-natured personality! Elijah's Frodo is a dazzling light in the doom and gloom of war and despair.
