Oh...sorry. I HATE to notice things like that and I do a lot cause my eyes are always on the hobbits when they are supposed to be somewhere else. I assumed that they did it cause the outside of Bag End was little. That Photo-shoot that you have in your icon has bag end in the back and there is one of him with his pipe in his mouth on the front steps but they are all hard to judge scale by. We see Gandalf go up the front steps to the door and it is tiny. We see Bilbo come out but we are looking at just the front door not the whole front yard. Despite all that I just said I don't spend a lot of time wondering about how they did the illusion I mostly just lose myself in it and believe in it.. so I really don't know how many fronts of bag end there were and how extensive they were.. I once, though spent a couple of enjoyable days drawing a map of bag end just for fun.. So I poured over the one in one of the art books and compared it and altered it to what we saw on the screen and it all ended up making sense. (I added bathrooms, cause.. REALLY!;-) Anyway tourist pictures of bag end in NZ were very useful for this.. and from this I saw how very small bag end really was.. and what you can see from the front steps. There are more windows than you ever get to see in the film.(I even figured out where Frodo's bedroom WINDOW is!!!! Not sure I could get through it.. but it would be fun to try. LOL!)
