Brokeback Mountain Screencaps" ~ The Kiss Scenes, Pt. VI, The Stairs Kiss, Second Half....

This post presents the second half of the "Stairs" kiss," or, "Reunion" kiss....



The lovers pause to breathe. Ennis seems almost overwhelmed by the experience, but becomes aware of where he is. He breaks the connection to glance furtively away, almost resentfully, wary, perhaps chafing at his sense of risk. But Jack hangs on, not letting go, and Ennis seems to settle under Jack's touch, encouraged.

Ennis appears to reach an internal decision, and, with a smile, he invites Jack to meet Alma. With a bound, they are up the stairs, the cursory introduction is made, and Ennis whisks Jack away to the motel.

That whole sequence never gets old, from those crinkles around Ennis's eyes when he *really* squeezes the breath out of Jack in their first hug, showing the emotional and physical force involved, via the passion of the first kiss for once initiated by Ennis while Jack holds back, till that last part where Ennis tries to "return to normal" and Jack won't let go.

Every time I saw it in the cinema, there were little laughs at Ennis's looking around after the hug, becoming aware that they might be watched, - clearly the audience expectation was that he'd pull away embarrassedly, true to form. And then there were gasps and sometimes even loud yelps of surprise as he instead deliberately proceeds to slam Jack into the wall. Part of the impact of that extremely passionate kiss is that it is unexpected, for the audience as well as for Jack, that *Ennis* would ever behave like that and with such abandon, after his prior reticence has been established. And the *look* that Jack gives Ennis immediately afterwards; - you've captured it in your caps; - that searching look of vulnerable, utter incredulity that his hopes for this reunion has just come true.... OH! That *is* emotionally powerful.

The last sequence is my favourite part, though. Ennis trying desperately to *somehow* pull himself together and Jack hanging on for dear life, determinedly moving in for more, more,more.... having nearly pulled Ennis's shirt off in the process. There's only one appropriate word for this sequence and that's: GAH!

However much both HL and JG were made to talk their kissing scenes to death and beyond in any number of inane interviews, and however much they professed embarrassment and nervousness and dread and what not to ward off the interviewers, this whole sequence is simply amazing acting. (As is Michelle William's turn in the middle of it). Who can possibly watch this and not feel and completely believe the desperate passion and love and longing?

Ah, Maeglian! You make me relive it without the caps! Yes, the audience is as shocked as Jack. Maybe Ennis is shocked at himself. In that scene in which Jack is clutching his shirt, just holding steady, I have a sense of Ennis as literally dizzy and needing the support to stay standing.

And when Jack recovers from his stunned state, the way he grabs Ennis and kisses him back, it's so utterly committed to the act, such a vivid, "Yes." The most viscerally, intensely spoken, "I do," I've seen.

What a scene. "Best actor!" "Best actor!" "Best actor!"

I've cast my vote.
