I’m back.

Greetings! I have just returned from my two-week-long visit to my computer-deprived family, and want to note that after the next screencap entry (“Wood Elves”, with caps from the EE scene plus two poems), the screencap project will be going on sabbatical. It isn't over, but it will be taking a break. This is just an update for fans of the series.

Before I go on, I want to try and work on some other things that have been put aside. Since July I've been trying to write an extended feedback to the author of a well-loved, well-known Frodo fanfic. I think it's about time I finished it. But you know me, I always have a lot to say and take a long time to say it (call me Treebeard). I also have found some paintings that might make good Frodo manips. I haven't done an "Art Travesty" in a very long while. I might forget how to do it! Even more, I want to write. I want to pick up where I left off in my never-finished Frodo saga. I haven't updated it in over a year, having got carried away making the screencap posts (which are so much easier to tackle). If I take advantage of my renewed free time (my full-time job ended just before my trip), maybe I can recover my momentum. Even if it is only for myself (by the time I ever finish it!), I'd love to bring it to its conclusion. I've got my fingers crossed, and have asked Muse-Frodo to put in a fresh appearance, preferably stripped for action.

Oh welcome back, Mech...

Even though your mighty Screencap Project is practically done, I'm glad that you are going to be using your journal for something else...we could all use a few Art Travesties !!
A little while ago, you were talking in terms of closing your journal, as there was, apparently, nothing else to say, but I have to say that it would be a shame to lose you from Live Journal...

So get Muse-Frodo to get his arse into gear and stop messing about !!! He hasn't put in an appearance for simply ages...tell him that we all miss him dreadfully, and would appreciate it enormously if he could start amusing you once more...

( By the way, did you watch that costume drama, "The Tudors" when it was screened a while back ? The one starring Jonathan Rhys Myers as Henry VIII...
Well, if you did, I have done a piece about the casting of the various characters in my journal, which you might find interesting...)

Wendy! Hi! Thanks for the welcome. And thanks for expressing interest in the Art Travesties. I've pretty much got through all the paintings I've ever found that would suit, but there are a few left in the halls of art, it seems. The problem typically is that even if I find an image online, it's too small to use for making a manip.

I'll have to catch up on your costume entry. I read a few reviews of The Tudors, but haven't seen it playing anywhere. Maybe I missed it?

Believe me, Mechtild, it won't be only for yourself!

This is one person who would love to see the completion of your story! :)

Welcome back Lass! I hope you enjoyed yourself and that you found much to be thankful for over the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Oooohhhh! Goody Art Travesties. :)

I second Maewyn's comment:
You will not be writing only for yourself.

I have been looking forward to hearing you say that you would love to bring your story to its completion.

*Group-hug*

Thanks so much, Estë. Your remarks cheer me on. So, still interested in the Story That Stopped Mid-way, ey? Well, I hope I can get it going again. Not to put you off it, but one of my personal challenges is to see if I can sustain interest once they're not in bed. (E: "Yours or the reader's?' M: 'Both! Ha!') I'm hopeful, since, if I had to choose, I may have liked the last two chapters best of all, even though they were almost erotica-free. :)

Those last two chapter were wonderfully descriptive and also informative. I have learned a lot, thanks to your research, regarding rural life.

I'm not here for the erotica alone. I love Frodo full-stop. :)

Maewyn! How great to see you here! Thanks for the supportive comments about the fic. I had assumed you had moved on from being interested in LotR or Frodo fanfic at this point. You encourage me. *hug* :)

From: [identity profile] maewyn-2.livejournal.com

Yes, I have generally moved away from LOTR fandom, but I still read the occasional story. I've always loved Threshold, and would love to read more of it!

Welcome back, Mechtild!

I miss your posts!

More Frodo Art Travesties, yay!

I'll read more Frodo/Rosamunda if there's lots of really hot sex.

*is horribly shallow* ;)

Which well-known fic are you writing feedback on (if you don't mind saying, of course)?

From: [identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com

Actually, I'd rather not say, Pearl. I'm not embarrassed to say or anything, but I don't want what is a simple announcement post to turn into a discussion of this fic (well, really it's an LotR-sized novel). I'll send you an email when I get back from errands. You've read it for sure. :)

Dear Horribly Shallow,

Regret to inform you there will likely be less, not more, hot sex.

But seriously, Pearl, I didn't expect you back as a reader anyway. You said after Ch. 12 that you didn't want to go on because it sounded as though it was getting sadder, and so it will and must. Not that there won't still be plenty of chapters with a light mood to come, since they won't yet have parted, but it's inevitable, given canon, that their ending, and the story's ending, will not be "happy". I hope it still will have a note of joy-in-spite-of-sadness, and hope, but a subdued, equivocal, Tolkien-esque sort of one.

Thanks for the welcome back! :)

From: [identity profile] pearlette.livejournal.com

Heh, I'm glad you can cope with my silliness. :p

I look forward to your email. :)

Being serious now: yes, I'm afraid I don't cope too well with reading about break-ups. :(

I'll say it again though: I think your Rosamunda is one of the best OFCs in LotR fanfic. And writing a convincing OFC for Frodo is no mean feat.

From: [identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com

Hi, Pearl. I just emailed you. No need to reply, just venting and hand-wringing.

Well, if you've friended the fic LJ, you'll get the updates. I am not sure I'll put the updates in the main LJ since almost none of my f-list will read a story about heterosexual Frodo anyway. You'll know by the rating if the chapter's got a sex scene in it or not. I don't have any brutal beatings, rapes, murders or other sorts of major bloodletting planned, so high ratings would never be given for things like that. *g*

What, srsly????

I do find that odd. ;)

I mean, all fanfic is AU anyway. So as long as something is written well, and convincingly, then I will read Frodo in a variety of situations. :)

Or Harry. Or whoever.

There's just one thing I would insist on: Frodo, including Sexy Fanon Frodo, is ALWAYS monogamous.

:)

Seriously. I don't canvas my list, but clicking open their journals and reading the names on their f-lists, I'd say the majority would self-indentify as slash-only fans. If not slash-only readers, they are fans of gen Frodo only. But they all share a love of film-Frodo, and all love looking at images of him.

The people who enjoy het on my list consist of the people I knew from the Harem or TORc, most of whom have long since parted ways from the fandom. Some haven't used their LJ's or posted in years, but their names are still on the list. Maybe they have other LJ's that they do use, but with other user names, writing in other fandoms. There are some people who've visited this journal that I didn't know from messageboards who *have* evinced an interest in heterosexual Frodo, but they are few, and most of those are now gone off to other things, too.

Amen to a Frodo who loves only one man or woman--at a time, anyway--although I will always have a weakness for Harem-like sex farces. "Too Many Tooks" always makes me laugh, and some of the erotica is nothing to sneeze at either.

I shouldn't sound so surprised: I've known this for years, that a lot of people prefer F/S to het.

All because of the dearth of suitable (suitable for Frodo, I mean) female characters in canon, of course. :)

'Too Many Tooks'!! - that was hilarious. Terribly naughty, but hilarious. Frodo was so unfailingly gentlemanly throughout - and so bested by those wicked Took sisters!

From: [identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com

Yes, the genius of TMT was the way she retained his character as an essentially kindly, well-bred gentlehobbit, while reducing him to a quivering mass (shaft?) of exposed genital nerve endings.

As for the predilection for S/F to F/OFC, after a few years of browsing my f-lists journals, I'd say that in many cases it has nothing to do with inadequate female partners for Frodo in fiction (canon or fanon). A lot of the slash fans on my f-list simply prefer to read about male-male romances and sexual scenarios no matter who the characters are and no matter the source story. When they've moved on from S/F, they have only moved on to other slash pairings, regardless of the fact that the fandoms to which they have moved spring from books or films that actually are provided with female romantic interests right in the source material. Even if the character is portrayed in a meaningful marriage or romance in the canon text, they still will only read about that character paired with another man.

So the reasons why people prefer to read fic in which Frodo is only paired with male characters are far more diverse than I would have thought a couple of years ago. Some seem to be drawn to the sex itself: the particular thrill or energy or sense of taboo conveyed in depictions of male-male couplings.

Others seem drawn to the enduring, companionable love that seems more possible between male friends than between men and women. A sexual dimension is added to that love, stepping up the level of intimacy, and adding the appeal of erotica, producing some very good bases for male/male relationships whose models go back to well-known "manly" lovers of Greek antiquity. This is the sort of slash that appeals more to me, since I have feel no special excitement over men having sex with each other, in particular. I think this sort of relationship is the basis for the best, most faithful-to-LotR slash, too. Its appeal goes beyond that of [well-written or mediocre] soft or hardcore male/male porn stories.

Welcome back!! Hope you had a great 2 weeks - although it would be so hard for me to be deprived of computer for 2 weeks!!

I look forward to any of your creative endeavors - enjoy whatever you work on!!

The visit went well, Frolijah Fan. Thank you for asking. :) And thanks for the kind words of support!

Hi, Mechtild! Welcome back. More Frodo art travesties would be very nice indeed.

From: [identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com

I just hope my new "free time" doesn't get *completely* swallowed up by holiday crunch! (I'm sure you know all about that. *g*) But thanks for the encouraging words, Mews.

From: [identity profile] alyrthia.livejournal.com

I selfishly count on you to decorate my friends page with Frodo's beauty FOREVER!!!

and have asked Muse-Frodo...fresh appearance, preferably stripped for action.

uhhmmmm yes. Inspiration noted. Got any of that to send spend around?

From: [identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com

Muse-Frodo is inexhaustible when it comes to his inspirational *issue*. The difficulty is getting him to drop by to produce it.

I'll send him along if he stays here long enough to deliver the message, Alyon!

From: [identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com

Thanks, Sam's Star. I've been working on the story for [what seems like] ages. It won a third place in the MEFA's last year, in the WiP category, but I haven't written a new chapter since then, letting myself get thoroughly sidetracked by my ongoing screencap project.

I am not sure you would be interested in it, however, Sam's Star. The love scenes are too explicit for readers of gen (if that's you), while those who enjoy Frodo erotica tend to read only slash, and this story isn't [slash]. But thanks for expressing interest!

From: [identity profile] frodosweetstuff.livejournal.com

I'll miss the screencap posts but I can understand that you need to take a break and that there are other things that had to wait almost too long. I hope you'll be successful in your manipping and writing and I'm looking forward to seeing you post some of it! :)

*hugs*

Thanks for the good wishes, Frodosweetstuff! A beautiful holiday time to you!
