Bilbo's Farewell Party ~ Two sets of smiles....
It's late, but I could not resist making another couple of sets of screencaps. Taken from the "full screen" theatrical version of FotR, these reaction shots come from the opening of Bilbo's farewell speech. Frodo seems to be really enjoying himself in these first segments, as he watches Bilbo play the emcee after dinner, apparently unaware (in the film) of what his guardian has up his sleeve.
[Note: Both sets of caps feature the closing and opening of Frodo's eyes. When I quickly flick the sets of caps backwards and forwards, it makes it look as though Frodo is batting his eyes. He's seems quite endearingly saucy. If I knew how to make a gif, I would definitely make these caps into gifs.]
The first set shows a genuinely, un-self-consciously happy Frodo. He's a bit shiny-faced, as if he has become a bit giddy from the conviviality, good wine, and plenty of food, not to mention the burning lanterns overhead.
I think he is melting lovely in this little sequence. More than any other bookend shots, this set is so unreservedly, light-heartedly happy, I think it provides the strongest possible contrast to the Frodo we see after the four companions return to Hobbiton in RotK.
Farewell Speech, reaction shot #1:

In the second reaction shot, Frodo's facial expression simply makes me giggle. He looks like he's a little tipsy; his closed-mouth smile is nearly a smirk as he listens to Bilbo's remarks -- threaded as they are with double meaning. (Those two do like their little private jokes.) This sequence would make a hilarious "eyelash-batting" gif.

Ah, those are the next to be done, of course. I did a set, but am thinking a missed a few frames.

I thought it would be a waste of time to post these caps but I don't think it has been. For one thing, they are only of Frodo, Frodo in detail, so that a Frodo fancier can skip all the rest. Also, my intention has been only to concentrate on Frodo's "lighter moments," since they are few, and scenes that aren't screencapped in enough detail (in my opnion). For intstance, I don't plan to do much with the fireside scene in which Gandalf gives Frodo his commission. There are gobs of caps of that already. But there are other Frodo moments that I feel are "missing" or underepresented in screen cap galleries.

I deleted some of thread about the Pippin comments in Devoted, because they were spoilerish for upcoming chapters. I did save the comments in a separate file before I deleted them, in case you want a copy of them. I do get new folks through occasionally, so I'd like to keep the comments non-spoilery up to whichever point in the story folks happen to be in. Thank you very much for your thoughtful remarks!

I have finally gotten around to checking this place out!!! I am loving the screencaps. I love seeing the hobbits in The Shire and I love these ones since there are too few moments of Frodo happy.

I thought I may as well begin posting them so that other Frodo lovers could save them into their own files if they wished.
screencaps
(Anonymous) 2005-11-16 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)I'm so glad I wandered in here. I love 'Happy Frodo.' Many thanks for sharing these beautiful, beautiful caps.
I hope you don't mind that I have saved these myself, but one good turn deserves another, so I've taken your caps and made those gifs you said you'd like to see. Here are the links:

I hope they work.

Re: screencaps
As I said elsewhere, my screencap selections are prompted by sheer swooning, not in order to study EW's acting as such. Because I think such moments are underepresented in the galleries that are still up, I am looking for "lighter" Frodo sequences, or ones in which he is just plain beautiful. There already are a lot of caps of the angsty sequences, but I'll see about that down the road if I think any of them bear posting yet again. *squee*
